Week 6: TED and Afghanistan

Updated: Jan 20, 2022

This week I had the honor of watching my friend, Jennifer Fluri, give a TED Talk. She, and all the speakers, were amazing. It felt odd having so many seats empty for social distancing, but even with that, you could feel the energy and appreciation from everyone to be in community, sharing ideas, and exploring ways in which to ease the suffering of the world.

Attending this event was an affirmation of how I am growing and changing. Seminary is allowing me to maintain a keen, critical lens for systemic oppression while also maintaining my spiritual grounding, This allows me to engage with trauma, injustice, and conflict while holding my center and optimism. I am better able to return to abundance mindset, hold a compassionate heart, and see creative, collaborative ways forward.

This week was also a time of being in community with women. I am perpetually in awe of the women I meet in this world. They are intelligent, innovative, and adaptive. They are kind, but refuse to accommodate nonsense. It makes me think of the words of Gloria Anzaldúa, when she spoke of Chicana women and how “wild tongues cannot be tamed.”
